NMJW Winter/Summer Adult Education
The New Mexico Jazz Workshop’s winter/spring adult education programs begin February 4th and continue through early April of 2019.
Learn jazz guitar from Wrecking Crew alum Michael Anthony. Michael’s played with Quincy Jones, Miles Davis and Elvin Jones. He’s recorded with Tony Bennett, Burt Bacharach and the Beach Boys. Hos music can be heard in over 200 film and television projects and, or course, around New Mexico.
Grammy award winner Bobby Shew will teach The Art of the Ballad. Students will have the rare opportunity to perform along with the instructor and the accompanying pianist. Intermediary/advanced levels of musicians are encouraged to participate.
NMJW Executive Director Markus Gottschlich along with Steve Figueroa and Mariano Morales will teach Beginning Jazz Piano where students will learn about a variety of basic and intermediate concepts in addition to studying harmonic and improvisational concepts essential for the advancement of any pianist. Instructors will alternate each week, providing students the opportunity to receive a variety of instruction and approaches.
Rodolfo Gonzalez will teach a comprehensive first-hand understanding of the main ingredients of Latin jazz rhythms and genres such as bossa nova, salsa and samba. Open to vocalists and instrumentalists.
Lewis Winn explores the art of jazz ensemble playing and Mickey Patten will instruct students on the fine art of jazz improvisation. Students will learn how to solo using fundamental tenets of rhythm, harmony, and dynamics.
Community Big Band instructor Henry Estrada will take his class through a variety of great tunes on the way to a final recital and the ongoing Real Book Jam welcomes musicians of all levels to come play some favorite jazz standards every Saturday where you can develop improvisational concepts and forge friendships with other musicians from around the city under the direction of Lisa Nichols and Michelle Spiro.
