Albuquerque Song Competition Winners Announced

New Mexico Music Awards announces Rumba de Albuquerque is named Grand Prize Winner in the Albuquerque Song Competition.

Rumba de Albuquerque performed by the group Baracutanga was the top winner in the Albuquerque Song Competition. The band’s eight members come from Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Argentina and include some notable names among the Albuquerque music community who now call New Mexico home.

With lyrics by Blake Minnerly and music by Baracutanga, Rumba de Albuquerque is a high energy dance tune that sings the praises of Albuquerque in short staccato bursts and a mix of different styles, rhythms and influences. The grand prize for the competition included $500.00, time in an award winning Albuquerque recording studio, mastering of their recording and other prizes.

The winners were announced after six of the ten finalists performed on The New Mexico Music Awards Stage at The New Mexico State Fair. The New Mexico Music Award’s Songwriters’ Initiative featured New Mexico Musicians on the African-American Pavilion Stage Saturday September 13, 2014 from 10am-10pm.

First runner up in the competition was Stephanie Graner and her band Cactus Tractor with their song It’s In Albuquerque, followed by Sid Housman with Colores de Albuquerque as second runner up.

Also performing their Albuquerque songs were Roger Cook, David Peters, Scott Brown and Laurianne Florentino.

The competition was sponsored by The New Mexico Music Awards, Listen ABQ and the City of Albuquerque. Additional prizes were provided by Wall of Sound Studios, Santa Fe Center Studios, High Fidelity Mastering and Jason's Music Publishing.

The Songwriters' Initiative will head to Ruidoso, New Mexico for a concert at the NM Library Association Annual Conference October 22nd-24th and will feature Jose Antonio Ponce and additional artist to be announced soon.
